You Don't Need Permission to do Good

In our training classes (listing at here), people often ask me permission to do things like asking questions, sharing of experiences and even going to the toilets. I often told them, "You can do anything you like in my classes, including scolding me, as long as you pay your fees".  That inevitably draws chuckles from them.

We are unlike the Americans, who have never asked permission for anything.  They just go ahead and to it.  That's why Nike's slogan is "Just Do It".  If this is Asia, it would be "Ask Permission First".

Psychologists said that people feel the need to ask for permission because they don't want to be seen as aggressive or outshining others.  Some people go one step lower: fearing that their permission will not be granted, they dare not even ask for permission.  Such behaviour explains why many people are living below their potential.  You can see it everywhere like:
  1. Subordinates dare not do better than their boss
  2. Salespeople dare not ask for the sale
  3. Managers dare not discipline their staff (how many actually take action when employees are perpetually late?)
  4. Trainers and teachers dare not tell their students that their answers are wrong
  5. Parents dare not to be tough on their children
  6. Political leaders dare not reject voters' requests for money without work
  7. Purchasers dare not ask their regular suppliers for a better deal
  8. Computer users dare not ask Microsoft to waive its software upgrade charges (like mobile software)
  9. Service staff dare not reject unreasonable customers' requests
The point is if you want to do well, just go ahead and do it.  You don't permission to do a great job.  This is because doing a great job is our innate ability: you see animals run as fast as possible and never seek permission from other animals.

Since doing a good job is natural, if you want to do a lousy job, you've got to ask permission.  Other than that, it's okay to be rude, for there is no need for you to ask for permission.  In fact the ruder you are, the more successful you'll become.  Related articles:
