Top 8 Situations When You Don't Reason with Others

Just like you, I like to talk reason to others when I find that they have got the wrong ideas. This could be due to my vocation as a trainer, coach and consultant.

I reason with people on a daily basis on many things, it could be as simple as pressing the lift bell, wearing masks correctly and how to avoid catching COVID.

But we know that there are at least 8 situations when you simply cannot reason with others.  In fact, these situations are very common and when you don't reason with others, you'll find that you guys can connect better.

You don't have to agree with them.  You can stick to your own beliefs and reasons.  But never talk reason with them.  The 8 situations to NOT Talk Reason are:

1. Reasoning with Your Boss and Customer, especially when he is Adamant

Unless your boss is committing a crime, there is no point in trying to convince him with reason or logic.  Reason: the boss is always right.  Just state your point and say, "for your consideration please".

2. Talking logic or sense to your Spouse, Partner or Fiance. Talk love, not reason. They are always right, in their own way.

3. In Settling Disputes, talk law, not reason.  This is a quick and effective way to resolve disputes.  Never talk about fairness or being kind and considerate.  Just talk about how the law interprets the disputes and you'll settle the dispute once and for all instantly.

4. When the other person is very angry, never reason, instead empathize or best, leave them alone.  Equanimity is the best recourse.

5. When you are doing very well, rich and famous and the world revolves around you.  In this situation, you will be arrogant and feel like the whole world is wrong except you.

6. When you are angry, in a hurry or not in the right state of mind In this case, your reasons are not reasons but simply preferences or biases.

7. When you are Down and Out and have no money no honey and no career success.  You have to lower yourself and never talk reason, for no one will listen to you at all.

8. Dealing with Obstinate people (people who are very stubborn) and people with unsound mind.  Don't join him to become a fool, and don't make a fool of yourself or others by talking reason.  Like some of my customers insist that the COVID vaccination kills more than prevents serious illness, no point to talk reason with them.  Just let them be.

If Not You, Who Else?

I learnt this very powerful 5-word phrase from Singapore's highest ever box-office movie ever: "Ah Boys to Men II". In one scene, the recruits were about to start their 3-day field camp.  Their Officer-in-Command asked them, "Before we moved out, anybody not feeling well?"  All the soldiers replied loudly, "No Sir!!!" "Gentlemen", continued the Officer, "Every time the training gets tougher, one thought comes to your mind, 'Why Must I Serve National Service?' "My answer to you is, 'If Not You, Then Who Else?'" Wow!  What a powerful phrase!  If Not You, Who Else may mean: You are the most suitable person, and we can't find anyone better than you.  This is appreciation at the highest level How can you push this responsibility to someone else? I am making a request to you specifically, please don't reject my request Can you find me another person more suitable than you? Please refer me anot...

Kindness as a Way of Life: How Kindness can Reward You 6 Times Over

Kindness as a Way of Life by Andy Ng Kindness is a universal language that transcends cultural boundaries, enriches human connections, and has the power to transform lives. It goes beyond mere acts of charity or random good deeds. To me, kindness, when practiced as a way of life, becomes a profound philosophy that can shape our interactions with others, the world around us, and even our own well-being. In this article, we will explore the multifaceted aspects of kindness as a way of life, touching on non-violent communication, the limitations of traditional charity, the potential harms of helping, the deliberate cultivation of kindness, and the incredible rewards it brings. 1.       Non-Violent Communication Non-violent communication (NVC) is a key component of practicing kindness as a way of life. Developed by Marshall B. Rosenberg, NVC emphasizes empathetic communication that seeks to understand and connect with others on a deeper level. It encourages ...
