Forced Management and You

Forced Management: Most people are doing Forced Management knowingly or unknowingly. For example, most managers set targets for their staff and simply pressurize them to achieve the targets. They do not get buy-in to the targets, nor do they help the staff to see how they can achieve the targets. And they assume that the staff will hit the targets on their own, if not, they will do some forcing like issue threats. Few would take time to motivate, inspire and lead the staff  to hit the targets. Even fewer will sit down and listen to the staff when they cannot hit the targets. We all know that all goals must be internalized for it to be achieved. If you don't buy-in to the goals, you will not achieve them. Even if you do achieve them in the end, you will not get the pride and satisfaction of achievement. We also know that if people achieve goals out of their own will, they will do so happily and willingly. Miracles will happen and we can turn all impossible to possible. ...

The Best Leaders Remain Silent so as to Listen

In Buddhism, there is this bodhisattva called Avalokiteshvara, or commonly called 'Guan Shi Yin" in China and South East Asia (or "Guan Yin" in short).  This bodhisattva is an enlightened being living in heaven that has delayed his own buddhahood so as to save mankind from their sufferings.  He (or she as in Guan Yin) has  the ability to listen and understand the suffering of others.   Buddhists believe that if we evoke his name, he will listen and help us.  Note that his one life cycle is of a few thousand years.  In everyday life, you as a human being are also like Avalokiteshvara if you can practise  deep listening and active listening .  Just by being able to  listen with calm and understanding and without any judgement,  we are already easing the suffering of another person.  If you were to engage in 30 minutes of such listening, you can relieve a great deal of pain in another person.  That's what coaches and train...

How to Delegate Effectively

1.     Define the task, output clearly. Use this SMART criteria ( specific, measurable, achievable, results wanted and timing) 2.    Delegate to a person with demonstrated competence  (this is not training, you are delegating an important task, don't leave to chance) 3. Explain the task clearly, preferably in writing (this will reduce misunderstanding & mistakes) 4. Invite questions and feedback ( Ask: "Can you show me how you're going to do it?") 5. Give a schedule, deadline  (Always leave some buffer in case of mistakes by giving a tighter deadline) 6.
