Many hotels in Singapore and the world market high tea as a lifestyle event. High and Low Tea were started by the royal family in 1840 in England. The word high in high tea means high table, whereas low tea means to enjoy it at a low table. So the royal and rich people would sit at the couch or sofa and enjoy snacks and tea at the low table. They consume this about 2 to 3 hours before dinner time, around 3 to 4 pm. As for the workers, they would have to work all day, often till late at night (9 or 10 pm) and thus they have to eat something that is filling in the afternoon. Because they have to eat fast, they have to eat at the normal table, which is a high table. Their snacks would include meat or bread that will make them last till late at night. So the next time you want to go to the hotel to enjoy 'high tea', make sure you do it on the sofa with a low coffee table and not at the usual high table for meals. Explore interesting art...
