Changing Your WeChat ID: Is It Possible?

Your WeChat ID (Identity) is unique to you. It is NOT your WeChat name, nor is it your WeChat password or your WeChat alias.
Your WeChat ID is independent of the mobile number that you link to your WeChat account. It also has nothing to do with the email or QQ account that you linked it to.
In China, your WeChat ID contains much information and is used in replacement of your Identity Card in many cities including Shenzhen.
When you first open your WeChat account, the company will assign you a computer code ID. You can easily change this computer to an ID that is easy for people to identify you and also easy for you to remember. For example, my WeChat ID is ‘AndyNgCoach’. What is yours?
Your WeChat ID can only be changed once
Some people, for various reasons, want to change their WeChat ID for a second time. This is not possible.
If you really want to change your WeChat ID, you have no choice but to delete your existing WeChat account.
Steps to delete your WeChat account:
a. Go to ‘Me’ page
b. Select Settings
c. Then Account Security
d. Next, select ‘WeChat Security Center’
e. Select ‘Account Cancellation’
WeChat will take 60 days to process your application to delete your WeChat account. Note that when you delete your WeChat account, all your contacts and chats inside there will be deleted permanently.
You cannot transfer your WeChat Contacts to your other WeChat account (if you happen to have one).
Note that to open another WeChat account, you need another mobile number that is not linked to any WeChat account.
For people that hate their existing changed WeChat ID and want to have a new one, they have no choice but to get another mobile SIM card and open another WeChat account. Then you have to manually add back the friends and re-join the group chats that you have in your first account. Once you have done these, you can proceed to apply to delete your first WeChat account that has the WeChat ID that you hate. Please keep this information for future reference. Thank you

Further 5 Things that Will Change Once COVID-19 Pandemic is Over

Further to my article on 8 April 2020 on the 5 things that will change forever once the COVID-19 Pandemic is over, there are further 5 things that will also change:
  1. Airfares for most travellers will be more expensive, simply because there will be fewer airlines still around.  As air travel has declined by 90% worldwide since March 2020, many of the smaller airlines will go bust.  With lesser supply, plus lesser demand from business class as most corporate people will get used to video and online meetings, fare for the economy class has to rise to make up for the difference.  We all know that business class seats are subsidising economy class, so with lesser class demand, economy class fares will shoot up
  2. Cost of maintenance for everything will go up: from simple cleaning to disinfecting, from social distancing to non-stop cleaning, from the common use of masks to high usage of water, expect to see at least an increase of 20% to 40% in your maintenance cost, including your water cost and electricity
  3. Governments will be weaker, but so will the oppositions, so there will be less chance of changes in governments or Presidents the world over.  People like Donald Trump will get re-elected easily, the Singapore PAP will get even higher votes than the previous election.  Governments that dealt successfully with the pandemic will be stronger
  4. Because many governments spent a lot of money and even borrow heavily to fight the pandemic, they either have to print more money (which will lead to inflation) or raise tax revenue to make up for the shortfall.  Whatever it is, something and someone has to pay.  It could be a cutback of non-essential spendings like defence, or downsizing of infrastructure building due to lack of money.  If your business is dependent on such government spending, you'll have less business
  5. Distance is No Longer a Concern.  Your Physical Location is NOT as important as your online presence. Because people now have got used to doing everything online, from education to entertainment, from consulting to designing, from legal to architecture, from playing to exercise, demand for prime commercial space will decline. This is good news for small companies and start-ups.

How to Convert Your Work from Offline to Online

To convert your work from offline to online, you need the following:

1. Convert all face-to-face meetings to online video meetings using FREE tools as follows:

  • For 2 persons (you and one other person), you can use WhatsApp and WeChat video call
  • For up to 4 persons, you can use WhatsApp group video call.  You first need to create a WhatsApp group
  • For up to 9 persons, you can use WeChat group video call.  You first need to create a WeChat group.  Go to the group chat, press the '+' button at the bottom of your phone and select 'Voice Call'.  Make sure you turn on your video
  • For up to 100 people, you can use Zoom cloud meetings.  Read my 2 other articles on Zoom and Zoom security concerns at the links below
  • You can also use Skype, Google Duo and Line
2. Convert what you want to tell people physically into brief notes and send to people

3. Create Group Chats in WhatsApp and WeChat for frequent discussions among your colleagues

4. Convert your mindset that you are going to use all these tools EVERY DAY.

5. Stick to the usual work routine, like don't send people information late at night (even though you could be working late at home) and respect people's mealtimes too.

Don't Use Zoom Until You've Read This

Ever since people are locked down all over the world due to COVID-19 Pandemic, they start to use video conference tools.  Among all, Zoom is the most popular because it is free, cheap (for the host) and extremely easy to use.  But the initial enthusiasm over Zoom soon dies off because people realised that Zoom is not secure and online video seminars or meetings are not as what they expect. Many also find that quality (not the content) of the meetings are way below physical meetings.

So what's next now? If you don't use Zoom, you can use Skype, Cisco, Gotomeeting, Teamview and Google Hangouts.  I have tried many of them and find that Zoom is still the best because it offers me and the participants what we want: simulation of a real physical meeting. (For how to use Zoom, read here)

How about the security issues of Zoom?  My article here already addressed them.  Based on my experience, plus many people all over the world, as long as you do the security measures, you are quite safe in using Zoom.  You can read it at here https://andyngtrainer.blogspot.com/2020/04/how-to-secure-your-zoom-online-meetings.html

Let me now state in summary the 8 Dos and Don'ts for Zoom:

1. Treat Zoom Meetings Seriously. Most people don't treat virtual online meetings seriously and they do silly things including coming late, making lots of noise, never use an earpiece, don't show video despite being told umpteen times, never change to their real names and video is not showing their face at all.

2. Participate.  Most people don't participate much in real physical meetings and in virtual meetings, they don't participate at all.  Understand that in virtual meetings, participation is even more important.   This is because to keep your eyes glued on your computer screen for over 30 minutes and don't move much is more difficult than to pay attention in real physical meetings.  How and when to participate?  Participate when the hosts ask you so.

3. Don't Know How To Operate the 3 Important functions of Zoom: Mute, Show Video and Group Chats.  You can learn how to operate Zoom at this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9guqRELB4dg

4. Never Focus.  People have not learnt how to be focused in front of a computer.  You have to pay attention and really listen.  SIT DOWN AND DON'T MOVEUnless you have missed your meals, don't eat too.

5. Never Use an Earpiece.  If you don't use an earpiece, you cannot hear clearly and also people cannot hear you because your mouth could be too far from the microphone on your computer

6. Never Use Computer for Zoom.  People think that Zoom is okay on a phone but in reality, only a computer can give you security.  All computers are protected by Microsoft or Apple security tools.  Also, your computer is not switched on all the time, unlike your phone, so it has a lesser risk of being hacked.

Most importantly, only a computer can give you 3 views on one screen: the PowerPoint slides or anything shared by the host, the participants' faces and the group chats.  Plus the fact that most people are not very savvy on their own phones, and many don't even know how to 'go back' as there is no back button on their iPhones. These people are heading for disaster when they don't use their computers on zoom

7.  Never Enter the Meeting Earlier.  The zoom meeting room is usually opened earlier than the meeting start time. Many people come at or after meeting starting time and they start to disturb everyone with noise, questions on how to use zoom and ask silly questions on basic stuff like 'How to mute ah?'  Because they are late, they are quite panicky and don't know how to respond to requests from the host.  YOU NEED TO ENTER THE MEETING AT LEAST 10 MINUTES BEFORE MEETING START TIME.

8.  Think that Zoom is a Fad and Will not be used once the lockdown is over.  This is not true, as evidenced from China, Hebei and Wuhan where people continue to use such tools even when they can go out.  Why? Because they realised that virtual meetings are much more productive than physical meetings.  (Find out how life will not go back to normal post COVID at here).  So you either have to use Zoom or you are OUT! Related articles:

How to Secure Your Zoom Online Meetings

Following my article on How to Use Zoom Effectively, plus recent news on Zoom security flaws, there are 7 ways that anyone can secure their Zoom meetings.  Understand that security flaws in Zoom are also present in other platforms including Skype.  My personal experience is that after installing and following these 7 features, your Zoom meetings will be much safer and you'll have a piece of that peace of mind.  The 7 things to do include:
  1. Set a unique meeting password that is not the one that you have used before.  Only inform your users 5 to 10 minutes before your meeting start time
  2. Enable the waiting room feature.  This allows you the host to see the people trying to enter the meeting before allowing them access
  3. Lock your meeting to disallow anyone from entering once your meeting starts, or 5 to 10 minutes after your meeting starts.  To do so, click the 'manage participants' at the bottom of the screen on Zoom
  4. Disable the option for others to join the meeting before the host does. They just have to wait for the host to start the meeting. In the meantime, they can test their video and audio on Zoom.
  5. Disable screen sharing for non-hosts
  6. Require people to pre-register for the meeting and do not allow 'walk' ins' at all
  7. Require all participants to open up their video and reveal their real names once they are inside Zoom. If not, remove them immediately.  Set the setting to disallow removed people to re-enter the meeting
I believe that when you have the above secure features, your Zoom meetings will be safe and sound.  Happy zooming everyone (from home)!  Related articles:

A and B People from COVID-19

With the lockdown from COVID-19, it is very obvious to see the good quality people from the bad ones.

B PEOPLE - DO NOTHING

Those that treat the lockdown of no need to work and still get paid (although less, but it is okay because of no need to work) from their employer and in Singapore, from the Singapore government (each person gets $600 cash on 18 April 2020) as a pure holiday.  Actually, since January 2020, the whole economy is very slow and their work was already much less as compared to 2019. But nevertheless, they treat this as their well-deserved holiday.

They may stay at home and get entertained the whole day from the many free channels offered by Starhub and Singtel.  Some stay at home and get glued to COVID-19 news and videos, busy forwarding such news to people on WhatsApp and social media a few times an hour.  They know that 99.9% of such news are fake, but they are good news and they feel that by forwarding such news to people they are saving mankind.

Some go to supermarkets and stock up on beer and tidbits and enjoy themselves whole day long.  Some sleep a lot (wake up at 10 am and take 2 to 3 naps during the day).

Some get political and start criticising and making fun of what their governments have done or are doing. They derive much fun from talking about such things.

The reason the above people do the above is not their fault. They were told that this COVID-19 will last another year, and the lockdown could be extended for long periods of time.  They also read that the rest of the world is also like that, so why do anything differently?  Also, the governments keep on telling them to stay at home, and they are doing that diligently. Isn't these what we are supposed to do?

Of course, these people did not read or don't bother on what China and Wuhan are doing now: they are back to work and enjoying a mini-boom in the economy.  They also didn't realise that China and Wuhan took 73 days from lock-down to normal and what happened to China could also happen to their home too.

A PEOPLE - MORE BUSY THAN BEFORE

These people do the following:
  1. Convert their work from offline to online and still work as much as before. For example, my company conducts online seminars every day via Zoom and Facebook Live. In fact, I am busier now as I have to also complete my second book on WeChat.
  2. Learn everything they can online, be it to improve their work (like PDPA courses, WeChat). I downloaded many ebooks to read. I also want to finish watching YouTube videos on Yijing. Many trainers including myself are now conducting free or small-fee seminars on Zoom.  You can learn how to use Zoom properly from my other article at the links below
  3. Help out people online, like sharing their expertise for free. Every day I write one to two articles on this blog site www.AndyNgTrainer.blogspot.sg
  4. Use this golden opportunity to catch up on housework, tidy up their house, get close to their children and family or just do some quiet thinking.  Every day I talk to myself more and got many inspirations from the world.
  5. Plan for post-COVID.  To me after 5 May 2020, the world will be very different and will not go back to the past, you can read my article on this.
Let me know if you belong to the A or B people.  Thank you. Related articles:
