Forget Google. This Supermarket May Have Discovered the Future of Business What if I told you that one of the most fascinating management experiments today is not happening inside a Silicon Valley technology company? It is happening inside a supermarket in Henan, China. Its name is Pang Dong Lai(胖东来) . Retail is supposed to be a tough business: intense competition, relatively thin margins, demanding customers and constant pressure on labour costs. Yet Pang Dong Lai appears to break many of the conventional rules. It pays its employees unusually well (average Rmb 9,000, 3 times more than average), provides generous leave (30 to 40 days), discourages excessive overtime, has introduced its famous “Unhappy Leave,” compensates employees in some cases when they suffer serious grievances at work, and provides benefits around important life events such as marriage and childbirth.
