Back then, even the non-Chinese spoke Cantonese. Mandarin was foreign to me. English? Nonexistent. I only started learning both when I entered Primary One. As Singapore modernised, so did I. English became my dominant language — the language of school, work, and success. But something precious was buried beneath the noise of progress: my deep-rooted love for Chinese culture — its wisdom, values, and soul. Then came a turning point in 2017.
