Not Dialects but Love

Dialects Are Coming Back? No. Love Is. With the phenomenal worldwide success of the Teochew movie Dear You , some people have concluded that Chinese dialects are making a comeback. I don't think so. People are not watching Dear You because it is in Teochew. They are watching it because it speaks the universal language of love . If the same story had been told in Mandarin, Cantonese or English, it would still have touched millions of hearts. Because the real power of Dear You is not its dialect. It is its humanity. That humanity is beautifully embodied by three ordinary people. Mu Sheng shows us the love of sacrifice. He works tirelessly, asks for little, and gives everything for his family. Lan Zhi shows us the love of courage. She quietly carries a burden that no one asked her to bear, choosing compassion over convenience for nearly twenty years. Shurou shows us the love of faith. She waits.  She believes. She remains steadfast through decades of uncertainty. Together, they r...

Lied for 18 Years: Ethical or Not?

Xie Lanzhi – Ethical Leadership Through Moral Courage She is probably the strongest ethics case study in the movie. Ethical dilemma of Not sending Musheng's Obituary  She could have sent Musheng's wife the news that Musheng had died. She did not.  Instead she chose to continue writing letters and sending money to his wife Shurou for almost twenty years. From a compliance perspective, many would say: "She is lying." Yet from an ethical leadership perspective, the question becomes much deeper. What higher purpose is she protecting? What Lanzhi demonstrates 1. Moral courage Doing what is difficult even when no one knows. She gains nothing. In fact, she sacrifices time, money and even her own happiness. 2. Stakeholder thinking Instead of asking "Is this good for me?" she asks "Who will be hurt if I stop?" She protects  Musheng,  Shurou, and  both families.  Responsible leadership is about multiple stakeholders, not self-interest....

How Dear You Embodies SuperME Unleashed

How Dear You Embodies SuperME Unleashed The global movie phenomenon Dear You is not just a touching story. It is a living demonstration of what SuperME Unleashed teaches: that every ordinary person has the potential to become extraordinary by living with Purpose, Love, and Gratitude (PLG). 1. Purpose – Living Beyond Yourself Every major character lives for something greater than personal comfort. Lan Zhi writes letters for nearly twenty years, not because she has to, but because she has a purpose: to protect hope, preserve dignity, and honour a promise. Purpose gives ordinary people extraordinary perseverance. SuperME begins when life is no longer just about "me," but about making a difference to others. 2. Love – Seeing the Greatness in Others The movie is not about romantic love. It is about choosing care over criticism, courage over convenience, and connection over separation. The characters believe in one another when others doubt them. They give strength instead of ju...

The Man that is Always Drunk is the One that Made Everything Possible

What's so special about Xie Lai Shun? As the father of Lan Zhi, he is drunk most of the time and never really cares about the hostel business.   That is exactly what makes Xie Laishun one of the most brilliant, subverted, and universally praised characters in the movie  Dear You (给阿嬷的情书)!   While he initially appears to be a careless, alcohol-dependent slacker who leaves all the heavy lifting of the Bangkok Chinatown hostel to his daughter, he actually serves as Lan Zhi's greatest emotional anchor and safety net .  Without this drunk man, there will be no Musheng making a living in Thailand and Lan Zhi's writing of letters for 18 years.  Viewers and critics on platforms like Douban have pointed out several reasons why his character is profoundly special: 1. A Progressive, Unconditional Fatherly Love In an era and culture heavily weighed down by patriarchal expectations, Laishun completely breaks the mold: Rejecting Toxic Traditions : When an unreasonable...

Greatness of an Ordinary Man: Musheng

My 3 Most Memorable Moments from movie  Dear You And What They Taught Me About Love Intelligence Every person walks away from Dear You with different memories. These are mine. 1. The Ending: "Be a Person of Qing Yi (情义)." The final scene touched me the most. Grandma did not tell her grandson to become rich.  She did not tell him to become famous. She simply said: "做人要有情有义。" She explained that when you have Qing Yi , people will naturally help you. That, to me, is one of the most profound life lessons. When you become a good person, goodness attracts goodness. When you care for others, people care for you. When you build trust, opportunities come naturally. Many people chase money. But perhaps money is not something we chase. Perhaps it is something that follows people with Qing Yi. That is why I often say: Qing Yi is Money. And Love Intelligence is Wealth. 2. Mu Sheng: The Greatness of an Ordinary Man Mu Sheng chose one of the toughest jobs: a trishaw rider. He wor...

High-Value Dear You Values

Why the Values in Dear You Are More Precious Than Ever Something becomes valuable when it is scarce , highly sought after , and meets a deep human need . That is precisely why Dear You has become such a phenomenon. It reminds us of values that are becoming increasingly rare in today's fast-paced world. These are not just movie values.   They are high-value life values . 1. The Value of Waiting In the days of handwritten letters, every reply took weeks or even months. Waiting was part of loving.  Waiting required patience and  trust. Waiting required confidence that the relationship was worth investing in. Today, we expect instant replies, instant results and instant success. Yet some of life's greatest rewards still belong to those who know how to wait. In investing, waiting for the right opportunity often creates greater returns than constant action. Love Intelligence teaches us that courage is not only knowing when to act. It is also knowing when to wait. ...

Dear You Attracts You Because It Is About You

Why has Dear You touched millions of people around the world? Because it isn't really about someone else. It's about you. For too long, you have carried your feelings quietly. You worked hard.  You sacrificed. You endured.  You loved. Yet very few people ever asked, "How are you really feeling?" Dear You does. It gives a voice to the emotions that many of us have kept hidden for years. Perhaps you see yourself in this movie because... You love without needing recognition. Not every act of love is spoken. Some of the greatest love stories are written through everyday actions. You sacrifice quietly. You put your family before yourself. You give without expecting applause. You continue to work hard, even when you feel underappreciated. You believe that doing the right thing matters more than immediate rewards. You do the jobs that others avoid. Not because they are glamorous,  but because someone has to do them. You remain faithful. Whether to your spouse, your family,...

I Only Watch Hollywood and Korean movies, what is Dear You?

The Top 8 Misunderstandings About Dear You As Dear You continues to attract packed cinemas and heartfelt discussions, many people still misunderstand what this film is really about. Here are eight of the most common misconceptions. 1. "It's a Teochew movie, so I should only watch it in Teochew." Not necessarily. Most Chinese Singaporeans don't understand rapid conversational Teochew anyway. Even many Teochews may notice that the accent differs from the version they speak. Don't let the language stop you.  Whether you watch it in Teochew or Mandarin, the heart of the story remains the same. 2. "I can't relate. I never lived in the era of handwritten letters." This is perhaps the biggest misunderstanding. Dear You is not about letters.  It is not about old times. It is about us. The letters are simply the bridge that reveals love, sacrifice, loyalty, forgiveness and hope, things every generation understands. 3. "I don't like sad movies....

Dear You Broke Every Rule, and Won Millions of Hearts

T he Movie with 10 "No's" and broke all records If you asked a movie producer how to make a blockbuster, they would probably give you a long checklist. Dear You  给阿嬷的情书 did exactly the opposite. It has what I call the 10 "No's": 10  things that conventional wisdom says a successful movie cannot do without. Yet it has become one of the biggest word-of-mouth phenomena in recent Chinese cinema. 1. No Stars Nobody knew the actors or the  director. No celebrities.   No famous faces. 2. No Professional Actors Almost everyone in the film had never acted before. The children. The three main characters. The 84-year-old grandmother. The matchmaker auntie. Even the supporting characters. They were ordinary people living ordinary lives.  They just take a break from their daily lives and take part in the movie, and go back to their lives.  3. No Big Sponsors The credits were filled not with multinational corporations, but with neighbourhood businesses that donated ...
