What You May Not Know about Lee Kuan Yew

Mr Lee Kuan Yew, aged 91, founder of modern Singapore and the (late) father of current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, passed away peacefully on 23 March 2015.

(Get your course listing at here)

In 2009, I was asked by New Horizon Computer Learning Centre to conduct a one-week Management and Leadership training for a group of directors and senior managers from the Ministry of Finance and Economics of the Republic of Tanzania (a eastern African nation).  During the course, I was asked to summarise how Singapore transformed itself from a third world nation in 1963 with per capital income of US$1,500 to a first world nation having the highest per capita income of US$59,000 in 3 decades.  My answer to them is just 3 words: "Lee Kuan Yew".

Born on 16 September 1923 to a upper income family, Lee Kuan Yew's grandfathers' wealth declined considerably during the Great Depression, and his father, Lee Chin Koon, became a poor shopkeeper.

Lee Kuan Yew speaks English as his native tongue and started learning Chinese in 1955 at age 32, before which he was illiterate in Chinese.  Lee has two sons and one daughter. The eldest son Lee Hsien Loong became Singapore's 3rd Prime Minister in 2004 while the younger son Lee Hsien Yang was once CEO of South-East Asia's largest telco Singapore Telecommunications Limited (Singtel).

During World War II when Singapore was occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945, Lee also ran his own businesses during the war to survive, among which, he manufactured stationery glue under his own brand called 'Stikfas'.

After the war, Lee studied at University of Cambridge in United Kingdom, where he graduated with a rare Double Starred (double First Class Honours).

In his memoirs, Lee recounted that he had intended to return to Singapore to work as a lawyer. Upon his return, Lee worked in John Laycock's law firm for $500 per month. He also worked as a legal advisor to the trade and students' unions.

On 12 November 1954, Lee, together with a group of fellow English-educated middle-class men, formed the People's Action Party (PAP) with an expedient alliance with the pro-communist trade unionists. This alliance was described by Lee as a marriage of convenience, since his English-speaking group needed the Chinese-speaking pro-communists' mass support base, while the communists needed a non-communist party leadership (PAP) as a 'smoke-screen', because the Malayan Communist Party was illegal.

At that time, almost 70% of Singaporeans spoke Chinese and various Chinese dialects as their native tongues. Those who spoke English as their native tongue comprised only 20% or so of the population and were therefore, a minority. Their common aim was to agitate for self-government and put an end to British colonial rule.

An inaugural conference was held in 1955 at the Victoria Memorial Hall, attended by over 1,500 supporters and trade unionists. Lee became secretary-general, a post he held until 1992.

Lee won the Tanjong Pagar seat in the 1955 elections and has held that seat undefeated until today 2015. He is the longest serving MP (Member of Parliament) Singapore ever has.

In the national elections held on 30 May 1959, Lee's party PAP won 43 of the 51 seats in the legislative assembly. Singapore gained self-government with autonomy in all state matters except defence and foreign affairs, and Lee became the first Prime Minister of Singapore on 3 June 1959.

Singapore gained full independence in August 1965 after being part of Malaysia from 1963 to 1965.

Lee Kuan Yew held the post of Prime Minister for 31 years until 1990, when he handed over the reins to his successor Goh Chok Tong. Goh held the helm for 14 years until 2004 when Lee Hsien Loong, Lee Kuan Yew's son, took over. Lee Hsien Loong has been the PM since then.

Lee Kuan Yew, in his memoirs, recounted how he has had to sing four national anthems in his lifetime: first, God Save The King when Singapore was a British colony; second, Kimigayo, the Japanese national anthem during the Japanese occupation; third, the Malaysian national anthem Negaraku, when Singapore was part of Malaysia for two years; fourth, Majulah Singapura, the current national anthem of Singapore.

5 Steps to Getting the Right People to Slog for You

(Note: You can take advantage of $500 Training Credit now, not 2016, details at here)

It's every manager or leader's dream to find the right staff to work for them so that they achieve more with less time.  There are 5 steps to getting the right people each and every time:
  1. Look for People that Have the Potential to Do Better Than What They Are Doing Now.  This means you cannot be looking for high flyers who are now having a very successful career.  You are looking for the hidden gems: people who are good but do not have a good career right now.
  2. Offer them a salary that's higher than what they asked for.  This will lock in their interest and commitment in you.  Also offer increase in salary after probation or upon completion of certain Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  3. Be Generous in Your Incentives.  Offer 3-tiers of incentives: high rewards for achievement of 'impossible' targets, rewards for achievement of mutually agreed targets and token reward for efforts put in but have yet to see the rewards
  4. Offer a career path of rapid advancement or re-deployment
  5. Take care of their personal lives.  This could me help them to achieve their personal goals, provide welfare to their families or just a simple care and concern for them AS AN INDIVIDUAL, not a staff.

We know that sales techniques that work in small sales will not work in large, complex sales. Purchasing today has gone through a major revolution where buyers now have more control over sellers.

Traditional selling based on Relationships do not work because buyers now demand more than relationships. Consultative Selling based on problem solving, although is working, is not enough. Bosses today want their sales team to not only serve customers, but also bring in sales aggressively. There must be a new way to sell.

Here comes The Challenger Sales method. Pioneered by Matthew Dixon and Brent Adamson, this revolutionary method takes control back from the customer. If you too want to win more sales, you need to take back control. Use this Challenger Sales method. It has proven to work for over 10,000 companies.

Power-packed Contents Include:
  1.  The 5 Types of Salespeople:The Hard Worker, The Relationship Builder, The Lone Wolf, The Reactive Problem Solver and The Challenger
  2. The Challenger Sales Method Explained
  3. Benefits of The Challenger Sales Method

You Don't Need the Chinese New Year to Do These 7 Things

Happy Lunar New Year. In our previous blog, we said that you don't need permission to do what is right, like upgrading your skills (courses at here),

In this new year, strive to do well in these 7 things:
  1.  No more reactive: be pro-active to ask for the sale, ask for more work, ask for better treatment, ask for upgrading etc
  2. Avert less and Turn all your dislikes into likes.  Get used to things and stop complaining about how you dislike the way things are today compared to yesterday.  No more yesterday, only today and tomorrow matter.
  3. Team Achievement, not just Individual Achievement.  Studies show that the more the team achieves, the easier will be the individual's job
  4. Take care of people's hearts and people will work hard for you.  Don't use command, control and coercion. Instead inspire, influence and motivate people.
  5. Be tough and dare to do things that people dislike. Like follow-up your prospects and do service quality audit.
  6. Lead yourself and don't wait for someone to lead you.  You need to lead the market, your prospects and your customers.
  7. Most importantly, go for more.  Never join in any recession, instead do double or triple what you normally do. Do Limitless Selling.

Bold Predictions Not for the Faint Hearted

* Take advantage of 2016 $500 Training Credit now, not 2016 at here *
After reading the world's analysis, these are my 7 predictions for 2015 (as written on 21 Feb 2015):
  1. Low Interest rates in USA will not only not rise (as promised by Yellen), but remain the same or even decline.  The recent rise in the US Dollar will be reversed by the second half of the year
  2. If you think that the market is awash with liquidity, there will be even more hot money floating around.  This is because Europe and other nations like Canada, Japan, China and Australia are now embarking on 'Quantum Easing', or printing of money into their economies
  3. Financial crisis will not materialize, instead there could be an Energy Crisis and Commodity Crisis. This means that everything will become cheaper due to the persistent low oil prices.  (note: I predict oil price will be below US$60 a barrel for most of 2015)
  4. Slow economic growth (less than 2%) will be the norm, and 1% to 1% growth is considered 'very good'
  5. Property prices in Singapore and most of the world will not go down, but in fact rise slightly towards the last quarter of 2015.  Note that property price in Singapore has less to do with demand and supply and more to do with government policies.  The Singapore government will not allow property prices to collapse in 2015. Some easing of the cooling measures will happen by May 2015.
  6. Unemployment will rise in all countries as the world's economies are moving towards MI (mobile internet).  With mobile, less people are needed for economic activities.
  7. Mobile Rules. Mobile will not only rule the economy but rule the world in other areas like politics, sports and travel. If your business has little mobile presence, your business is either very special or very quiet.

Start Your Day Right with These 7 Secrets

Now you too can start your day right with the following 7 mindful thoughts:

1.  Take Out Filler Words in Your Daily Conversation.

Filler words and phrases are sounds that have no meaning, they are there to fill in spaces while we are thinking.

The most common fillers are 'so', 'well', 'like', 'you know', 'how come' and 'sort of'.  Filler words reflect a unclear mind that just wants so speak.  Imagine a conversion full of filler words, what a mindless conversation it is!

2.  When Eating, Just Eat.

Many people like to gobble their food, and the more they like a food, the faster they eat it.  Many people are afraid that if they don't fast, that good food may be gone.

The point is until you adopt mindful eating, you are not absorbing the full benefits of the food you're eating and you're just wasting food!  In Japan, it is very rude to eat and talk at the same time, and munching a food while listening to a lecture or walking is also considered barbaric.  So take one bite at a time and enjoy your food to the fullest!

3.  Give out True Compliments - refer to the previous blog on this at here

4.  Secret Acts of Virtue.

Do something good for others, like charity or service, but don't let them know.  All religions practise generosity, but we are more than religions.

Generosity is innate, we don't need to learn this.  Babies just give out smiles without expecting anything in return.

The Buddha said: Generosity is the highest virtue, and anonymous giving is the highest form of giving.

5.  Notice Dislike

Aversion or dislike, along with greed and ignorance, are the three common weaknesses of humans.  Whenever we dislike something, we push away, yet the more you push it away, the more it comes back to you.  It is like trying to push a ball down in a swimming pool.

Most of us have thousands of aversions in a single day, and such aversions are giving us unnecessary stress and suffering.

Aversion is also the hidden source of anger and aggression.  It arises from the mistaken notion that if we could just manage to get rid of something or someone, then we would be happy.  That something to get rid of could be as trivial as a queue or as large as a terrorist group.

There are other ideas of aversion like "If I could arrange things - and people - to be just as I want them, then I would be happy."  This is absurd because people and things are changing all the time, how can we ever arrange them in perfect order?  Also, our "perfect" is not perfect to others.

So get rid of aversion and your life would be happier instantly. Instead of pushing it away, embrace it and see how you can best adapt to it, ignore it or make the dislike become your like instead!

6.  Like When You Dislike.

Appreciate everything and like them instead of disliking them.

In this very moment, what can you like or appreciate?  This practise helps us to cultivate joy, which is more than just appreciating what makes us feel good but includes the happiness we feel in connection with other people's joy and good fortune.  We normally feel joyous at our family members' success, but when someone we dislike is successful, we feel jealous and envious instead of joy.  Such negative mind makes us want to focus on the negative aspects of people that we don't like.

The result is that we are hurting ourselves, because our jealousy and envy only make us want to push away other peoples' successes, and in turn also deny our own successes.

So the next time you see something good happening to a stranger or someone you don't like, feel joyous too.  It is the start of your own riches

7. Smile to Yourself.

Do an inner soft smile like what The Buddha does all the time (you can see a typical Buddha's statue below).

If you check the mirror a few times a day, you'll be surprised to find that all the time you are actually frowning and not smiling.  We have no hesitation to smile to others at work, but how often do we smile to ourselves?

Smiling is natural, as all babies smile without being taught or forced by anyone.  Smiling expresses your happiness to the outside.  When others are happy, you'll be even more happy.  Fortune will come your way.

Mindful Compliments

Exercise for you: once a day, look out for someone close to you - can be a family member, colleague, boss, Facebook friends, relatives or just friends - and give them a Mindful Compliment.

Most people give compliments that are neither mindful nor meaningful.  Many are just flatteries, some are even sarcasms disguised as compliments.  Others compliment just for the sake of it, with no intention or mindfulness behind.

Many people commented that when they give out compliments, the receiving person often block it."Oh, I am not perfect", or "Not really", "Today I am not in top form" or even start analysing the compliment and give their comment or rebuttal of it.

In fact, being given a compliment creates vulnerability.  Some people may become wary of compliments at work, for the compliment from the boss often follows some kind of extra work and stress.  In adolescence, people often get compliments and later were stalked or teased.  Many people are not sure if the compliment was meant sincerely or was designed to make them the butt of a joke.  That's why many people give compliments in a joking manner.  They often don't take compliments seriously and rebut a compliment as if it were a joke in order to protect themselves from potential embarrassment.

Today let's learn how to give out Mindful Compliments - the kind of compliments that do not have any negative connotations or meanings.

Firstly, the compliment has to be specific, not general.

Secondly, it has to be timely and the timing must be right or the result will be hilarious.  Like your compliment of my good looks when I'm in a hurry will make me suspicious instead.

Thirdly, centre the compliment around something that touched you, because this type of compliment promotes a sense of connection and intimacy.  "I was touched by how you took the trouble to take those pictures and share with us.  Thank you. "

Fourthly, compliment things that the person has done, not what he has.  Many people are very uncomfortable about temporary or conditional qualities such as beauty or wealth because they know that such qualities are serendipitous intersections of hereditary and cultural norms.  Besides, such qualities are impermanent and is just a temporary gift.  In time to come people will age and their beauty will fade.  That's why we don't compliment people for their beauty, but for what they have done to make themselves look beautiful.

Fifthly and lastly, compliment by stating your feelings, not your judgement or conclusion.  This is because your judgement or conclusion may not be agreeable, but people can relate to feelings, even if it something they disagree.  Say things like "I feel you look better in here" instead of "You look better in here".

So bear in mind the above 5 points and give out Mindful Compliments today.  Related articles:

New Year Wish for Your Boss

Are you a good boss?  Given a chance, would your employees want to work for you?  Most importantly, are you able to make people better than themselves, or make people better for just yourself?

Make no mistake: the best bosses could also be bad bosses at times.  The key to being a good boss is how to Be the best, and learn from the Worst.  Taken from our all-time best-seller new course How to Be a Great Boss and books from Robert I Sutton, there are 5 things that you have to do:
  1. Don't Crush the Bird.  Managing people is like holding a bird in your hand.  If you hold it too tightly, you'll kill it. But if you let loose, you'll lose it.  Indeed managers that are too aggressive will damage relationships and managers that are too passive and not assertive enough will get people climb over their heads.  Like salt in a dish, too much will overwhelm the dish; too little is similarly distracting; but just the right amount of salt will leave an unforgettable experience. That's why sometimes it's best to leave people alone, no management could be best management
  2. Grit, not Greed, Gets You There.  The best bosses think and run like they're running a marathon, not a sprint. That's why perseverance, not just persistence, will deliver you results over the long term.  Gritty bosses are driven by the nagging conviction that good can be better, and they're never satisfied with with 'good enough'.  But how does such a strong conviction make the team do better and not stress them out?  Look at the next point...
  3. Small Wins Lay the Path for More Wins.  Having long-term goals, and doggedly working toward them day after day, is a hallmark of gritty bosses.  Big, hairy, audacious goals set the direction and energize people, but if you only have such big goals, you are merely a tyrant and will tire your people out easily.  What makes people able to move on despite difficulties is the feeling of victories, and small, periodic wins definitely out-win big end-of-period wins. The best bosses break down problems into bite-sized pieces and inspire people to achieve them without much difficulty.  Doing so instils confidence and equanimity, and spurs immediate action.
  4. Beware of the Toxic tandem, where bosses because of their power becoming over-bearing and watch over every little step of their employees.  Doing so will reduce your people to merely robots, they will naturally 'out-perform' when you're there, and once you are absent, they will not only not perform, they will actually make severe mistakes that you may never recover. They called this the poisonous toxic that create cancers in your team!
  5. Love Them or Lose Them.  Great bosses see their job as getting on peoples' backs and protecting people's greatest asset: their self-esteem.  They care and love their team, but never get into any loving affection.  The 4 ways to professionally love people at work are equanimity, kindness, empathy and joy. Grab the hidden details at here.

You Don't Need Permission to do Good

In our training classes (listing at here), people often ask me permission to do things like asking questions, sharing of experiences and even going to the toilets. I often told them, "You can do anything you like in my classes, including scolding me, as long as you pay your fees".  That inevitably draws chuckles from them.

We are unlike the Americans, who have never asked permission for anything.  They just go ahead and to it.  That's why Nike's slogan is "Just Do It".  If this is Asia, it would be "Ask Permission First".

Psychologists said that people feel the need to ask for permission because they don't want to be seen as aggressive or outshining others.  Some people go one step lower: fearing that their permission will not be granted, they dare not even ask for permission.  Such behaviour explains why many people are living below their potential.  You can see it everywhere like:
  1. Subordinates dare not do better than their boss
  2. Salespeople dare not ask for the sale
  3. Managers dare not discipline their staff (how many actually take action when employees are perpetually late?)
  4. Trainers and teachers dare not tell their students that their answers are wrong
  5. Parents dare not to be tough on their children
  6. Political leaders dare not reject voters' requests for money without work
  7. Purchasers dare not ask their regular suppliers for a better deal
  8. Computer users dare not ask Microsoft to waive its software upgrade charges (like mobile software)
  9. Service staff dare not reject unreasonable customers' requests
The point is if you want to do well, just go ahead and do it.  You don't permission to do a great job.  This is because doing a great job is our innate ability: you see animals run as fast as possible and never seek permission from other animals.

Since doing a good job is natural, if you want to do a lousy job, you've got to ask permission.  Other than that, it's okay to be rude, for there is no need for you to ask for permission.  In fact the ruder you are, the more successful you'll become.  Related articles:
