Peter Lai, who passed away recently at 76, is remembered as the person that made Sam Hui famous back in 1974. With less than Primary school education, Peter learnt everything from newspapers and magazines. He has penned the lyrics of about 300 songs, from 1974 to 1986. His most famous song is A Wanderer's Heart 浪子心声 (1974) Peter Lai’s lyrics feel remarkably current. Written in an earlier era, they describe problems that have become even sharper in the age of social media, AI, instant wealth and constant comparison. The central message, to me, is this: the world may change, but human nature does not change very much.
