Work from Home: The 5 Things to Watch Out For

Everyone will be working from home in the entire world when the COVID-19 Pandemic spreads.   For most people, working from home will be very unproductive, unless you do the following 5 things:
  1. Wake up Early and Sleep Early.  You have to wake up early and need to sleep early so that you will wake up early.  The reason you cannot sleep late is you will be taking several breaks during the day (and night), and as such you have to avoid over-sleeping.  It is good to take a proper 15 to 20 minutes nap during the day, but improper to take 3 to 5 naps during the day
  2. Put away your handphone most of the time while you are working from home.  This is common sense as the phone will distract you more than ever when you're working from home
  3. Off the power button for TV, as you don't want to be watching TV news most of the time, especially on the COVID-19 situation
  4. Exercise once a day to keep your spirits up.  Working from home initially will be energizing for most people, but after a few days, people start to feel down as they lack the social interaction at the workplace. To keep your spirits up you can listen to music or sing karaoke, but these activities will distract you for the entire day.  Going out to exercise is the best way to keep your energy up
  5. Get all your equipment ready.  You need the following 5 key equipment to work from home:
  • Wireless earpiece (don't use wired earpiece as they restrict your movement) for online video conferences
  • Bluetooth speakers for online video conferences and to access the 'How-to' videos on YouTube as you have no one to help you other than YouTube
  • Comfortable chairs and clean tables with good ventilation
  • Batteries for all your gadgets including your mouse
  • Proper computers with a good screen and a good keyboard.  Tablets will not be useful for most work situations
One more thing: work from home offers you something you never have when you work in the office: time to do independent thinking.  But don't spend too much time reading messages on WhatsApp or Facebook as they are 99% fake and will make you do dependent thinking instead.  What I do is to think on my own and strategize on what to do.  Then I share with people on social media and get proper responses.  Happy working from home! If Not You, Who Else?

I learnt this very powerful 5-word phrase from Singapore's highest ever box-office movie ever: "Ah Boys to Men II". In one scene, the recruits were about to start their 3-day field camp.  Their Officer-in-Command asked them, "Before we moved out, anybody not feeling well?"  All the soldiers replied loudly, "No Sir!!!" "Gentlemen", continued the Officer, "Every time the training gets tougher, one thought comes to your mind, 'Why Must I Serve National Service?' "My answer to you is, 'If Not You, Then Who Else?'" Wow!  What a powerful phrase!  If Not You, Who Else may mean: You are the most suitable person, and we can't find anyone better than you.  This is appreciation at the highest level How can you push this responsibility to someone else? I am making a request to you specifically, please don't reject my request Can you find me another person more suitable than you? Please refer me anot...

Kindness as a Way of Life: How Kindness can Reward You 6 Times Over

Kindness as a Way of Life by Andy Ng Kindness is a universal language that transcends cultural boundaries, enriches human connections, and has the power to transform lives. It goes beyond mere acts of charity or random good deeds. To me, kindness, when practiced as a way of life, becomes a profound philosophy that can shape our interactions with others, the world around us, and even our own well-being. In this article, we will explore the multifaceted aspects of kindness as a way of life, touching on non-violent communication, the limitations of traditional charity, the potential harms of helping, the deliberate cultivation of kindness, and the incredible rewards it brings. 1.       Non-Violent Communication Non-violent communication (NVC) is a key component of practicing kindness as a way of life. Developed by Marshall B. Rosenberg, NVC emphasizes empathetic communication that seeks to understand and connect with others on a deeper level. It encourages ...
