In The Art of War, Sun Tzu never directly uses the words “Purpose, Love, Gratitude” — those are the SuperME PLG language — but the essence of these principles runs deep in his strategy.
Here’s how Purpose, Love, Gratitude show up in Sun Tzu’s thinking:
1. Purpose (志 – Will / Clear Direction)
Sun Tzu starts by stressing the importance of the Dao (道) — the moral purpose or guiding principle that aligns the ruler, generals, and soldiers.
-
“The Dao causes the people to be in complete accord with their ruler, so they will follow him regardless of their lives, undismayed by any danger.” (Chapter 1: Laying Plans)
-
This is exactly Purpose in PLG — a clear “why” that inspires action beyond personal gain. Without a unifying purpose, armies (or teams) scatter in fear or self-interest.
Modern SuperME Application: Leaders who anchor their actions in a higher purpose earn loyalty, unity, and resilience from their teams.
2. Love (仁 – Humanity / Care for People)
Sun Tzu emphasizes caring for soldiers as if they were your own children:
-
“Treat your men as you would your own beloved sons, and they will follow you into the deepest valley.” (Chapter 10: Terrain)
-
This is the heart of Love in PLG — leading with empathy, compassion, and respect. Soldiers fight not just for orders, but for someone who values them as human beings.
Modern SuperME Application: A leader’s genuine care transforms teams from mere followers to deeply committed partners in success.
3. Gratitude (恩 – Favour / Recognition)
While Sun Tzu doesn’t use the word “gratitude” explicitly, he repeatedly talks about rewarding merit, acknowledging contributions, and honoring alliances:
-
“Reward the deserving generously; do not begrudge rewards.” (Chapter 2: Waging War)
-
This reflects Gratitude in PLG — recognizing and appreciating efforts builds morale, strengthens trust, and creates a culture of mutual respect.
Modern SuperME Application: Publicly appreciating efforts, even small ones, fuels long-term loyalty and willingness to go the extra mile.
In Summary
-
Purpose = The Dao: A clear mission that aligns and inspires.
-
Love = Humanity in leadership: Treating people with genuine care.
-
Gratitude = Recognition and reward: Building trust through appreciation.
Just as Sun Tzu’s ultimate principle is “To win without fighting”, PLG enables leaders to achieve extraordinary results without burnout, conflict, or fear — making Purpose, Love, and Gratitude a living modern form of The Art of War.
