Stop Managing and Start Coaching

Managers are trained how to manage and lead their people, and some of them are proud of the fact that they can change people.  For managers who are commissioned to hit some aggressive sales numbers, coaching is the last thing on their mind.

But we know that all change must come from inside, and a manager can never push for results or attempt to change people overnight.  Real change happens when people want to change by themselves, and the way to do this is to coach them.

In order to coach people, managers must know the following 5 important facts of coaching:
  1. Surrender Your Agenda When Coaching. Coaching is about the coachee, not the coach or the coaching program.  The coach must go into the mindset of the coachees, not his own mindset.  Although the coach may have some objectives when he coaches his coachee, he must remain flexible and realize that the most important thing is not to complete his agenda but to help to solve the coachee's problem
  2. Coaching is a Process, not a Destination.  Most important is what the coachee derives during the coaching session, and the subsequent action that he takes.  So there is no accomplishment for the coach, for his accomplishment lies in what his coachee does
  3. Coach from the Heart, not from the Head.  There is certainly a place for templates and a step-by-step model in coaching, but nothing beats coaching from your heart.  For only when you coach from the heart can you truly touch the coachee and inspire him.
  4. Detach From the Outcome. If you were ever in a situation where you've walked away from a conversation feeling drained or exhausted, chances are there was something you were attached to or attempting to control in the conversation.  That means that you were attached to certain outcome. In coaching, you need to be aware of such attachments, like the need to be right, the need to produce a desired result, the need to be understood and have people agree with you
  5. Create Possibilities, not Expectations.  A possibility is something that may exist or what could happen, whereas an expectation is an agenda attached in your mind.  It is only when you are open to possibility that you are inspired to innovate or create something new while being present in a conversation or activity.  You will feel a sense of choice in your pursuit of your goal.
Whether you are a manager, director, supervisor or executive, you know that at the end of the day, people learn more by themselves than from others.  Coaching is the one and only way that people can learn by themselves.  Start coaching and you'll see great changes in yourself and your people.  The next How to Coach and Mentor Effectively seminar is on 12 May 2015 Tuesday 9 am to 5 pm.  Fee is $398 each or $299 each for 2 and above.  Venue is at The Plaza 02-346, 7500A Beach Road.

If Not You, Who Else?

I learnt this very powerful 5-word phrase from Singapore's highest ever box-office movie ever: "Ah Boys to Men II". In one scene, the recruits were about to start their 3-day field camp.  Their Officer-in-Command asked them, "Before we moved out, anybody not feeling well?"  All the soldiers replied loudly, "No Sir!!!" "Gentlemen", continued the Officer, "Every time the training gets tougher, one thought comes to your mind, 'Why Must I Serve National Service?' "My answer to you is, 'If Not You, Then Who Else?'" Wow!  What a powerful phrase!  If Not You, Who Else may mean: You are the most suitable person, and we can't find anyone better than you.  This is appreciation at the highest level How can you push this responsibility to someone else? I am making a request to you specifically, please don't reject my request Can you find me another person more suitable than you? Please refer me anot...

Kindness as a Way of Life: How Kindness can Reward You 6 Times Over

Kindness as a Way of Life by Andy Ng Kindness is a universal language that transcends cultural boundaries, enriches human connections, and has the power to transform lives. It goes beyond mere acts of charity or random good deeds. To me, kindness, when practiced as a way of life, becomes a profound philosophy that can shape our interactions with others, the world around us, and even our own well-being. In this article, we will explore the multifaceted aspects of kindness as a way of life, touching on non-violent communication, the limitations of traditional charity, the potential harms of helping, the deliberate cultivation of kindness, and the incredible rewards it brings. 1.       Non-Violent Communication Non-violent communication (NVC) is a key component of practicing kindness as a way of life. Developed by Marshall B. Rosenberg, NVC emphasizes empathetic communication that seeks to understand and connect with others on a deeper level. It encourages ...
