It's Your Co-workers, not Pay Check, that Makes You Happy at Work

Since we spend over two-thirds of our waking hours working and living around work, it is more important to be happy at work than happy after work.

Although many consider work to be a necessary evil, work is actually a necessary happiness, only if you know how to be happy at work. The 7 most Frequently Asked Questions on how to be happy at work:

1.  Will higher salary make one happier at work?

Unless you are trying to make ends meet, money will not be a great motivator. Once you have enough to live a life that you are used to, unless you have some new expenditure, more money will give you a disproportionate amount of happiness.  For example, if you get at 10% salary raise, you will be happier by less than 10%.

2. Does Achieving Progress at Work Make Me Happier?

Definitely.  Achievement is a sense of self-worth and all progress, no matter how small, will make your work happier.  Note that the same principle for money applies: once you achieved a certain amount of success at work, more achievement will give you a disproportionate amount of happiness.

3. Does Challenging Work Make us Happier or More Unhappy?

Whether your work is challenging or not depends on your skills. If you find it too challenging, you will be unhappy.  But if your work is too relaxed, you will be unhappy at work.

4. Is it Better to Work at Places with Happy Colleagues and Environment?

Undoubtedly yes.  Human beings are social creatures, and our happiness is very dependent on the environment we are in.  So if you earn high salary but have colleagues that are very unhelpful, you will not be happy at work.

5. Does Personality Play a Great Part in Happiness of Employees?

The scientific research is yes, up to 50% of a person's happiness at work is due to his personality.  So if you are a jaunty person, you will happier at work as compared to a sulky person.  That's why it is important to hire the right people for they will form the work environment, which plays a big part in work happiness.

6. Does happiness change with age? Are women more happier than men at work?

Most people will become happier when they reach 50 and above. This is because they are now more balanced in their life's perspective, and thus they will be more grateful and grumble less.

7. How about More Skills and Better Trained Employees?  Are they happier?

When you know more about your work, your work will become easier.  You will become more happy at work.  However, if your work is not challenging enough, you will be less happy.

If Not You, Who Else?

I learnt this very powerful 5-word phrase from Singapore's highest ever box-office movie ever: "Ah Boys to Men II". In one scene, the recruits were about to start their 3-day field camp.  Their Officer-in-Command asked them, "Before we moved out, anybody not feeling well?"  All the soldiers replied loudly, "No Sir!!!" "Gentlemen", continued the Officer, "Every time the training gets tougher, one thought comes to your mind, 'Why Must I Serve National Service?' "My answer to you is, 'If Not You, Then Who Else?'" Wow!  What a powerful phrase!  If Not You, Who Else may mean: You are the most suitable person, and we can't find anyone better than you.  This is appreciation at the highest level How can you push this responsibility to someone else? I am making a request to you specifically, please don't reject my request Can you find me another person more suitable than you? Please refer me anot...

Kindness as a Way of Life: How Kindness can Reward You 6 Times Over

Kindness as a Way of Life by Andy Ng Kindness is a universal language that transcends cultural boundaries, enriches human connections, and has the power to transform lives. It goes beyond mere acts of charity or random good deeds. To me, kindness, when practiced as a way of life, becomes a profound philosophy that can shape our interactions with others, the world around us, and even our own well-being. In this article, we will explore the multifaceted aspects of kindness as a way of life, touching on non-violent communication, the limitations of traditional charity, the potential harms of helping, the deliberate cultivation of kindness, and the incredible rewards it brings. 1.       Non-Violent Communication Non-violent communication (NVC) is a key component of practicing kindness as a way of life. Developed by Marshall B. Rosenberg, NVC emphasizes empathetic communication that seeks to understand and connect with others on a deeper level. It encourages ...
