The More Boring, The More Success

 From Life Hacks
Why “Boring” Leads to Success

It’s not sexy to sit at your computer or work overtime to finish a project. It’s not sexy to read for hours to gain new insights. It’s not sexy to jog for an hour on a cold day to do your exercise. We’d much rather enjoy the fruits of our success and live a lavish lifestyle (and show off to everyone else that we are, indeed, living said lavish lifestyle).

Same with our routines. It might seem boring to have the same morning routine day in and day out. But we only have a finite amount of cognition per day. You don’t need to innovate things that don’t need innovation. For example, figuring out a new breakfast for each morning takes up lots of time, energy, and cognition — you’d probably benefit from eating the same thing at the same time every day.

Ultimately, over time, those “boring” habits and rituals help inch you closer to your goals. They let you focus and express true creativity on other things because all the smaller parts of your routine are on auto-pilot. They help you feel fully prepared, give your undivided attention to the things you need to do, and make incremental improvements daily.

Ultimately, it’s the “boring” that leads to the “sexy.” It’s the tireless, diligent work that no one sees, which leads to tremendous success over time.

For example, traveling the world for the past two years, you might think my life is “exciting;” that I’m constantly doing all these “amazing” things. And sure, if I only posted my greatest moments on social media—as many other digital nomads do—it’s would be easy to assume that.

But I'll be honest: If you took a snapshot of me every hour of every day, you would see that my life is pretty simple. I work on my business, I exercise, I eat, I sleep, I read, and I relax—the highlights of me going to a tourist attraction or enjoying fun adventures are really the exception to the norm.

Yet these habits are the very things that allow me to travel the world while working remotely. One hand feeds the other.

There is, however, a big difference between a “rut” and “routine” that needs to be clarified.

A “rut” is, for example, going to the same watering hole every weekend, sitting at the same table, and commiserating with your friends about how much you all hate your job again and again.

A “routine,” however, is an arrangement of habits you perform to improve yourself and help you feel ready to give 100% each and every day.

Interestingly enough, some people might take shots at your routine (or having a strict one). To them, your routine represents a backhanded insult to them — because they lack the disciple necessary to create one.

Sure, you don’t have to live every single moment of your life based on a fixed schedule. (If anything, it’s good to add some spontaneity and adventure to life.) But at the same time, it helps to remember that what leads to your growth and success are the things that might seem boring at the moment.

Take inventory of those boring rituals you currently have and think about the habits you gave up because they were boring.

I wrote the book Practical WeChat Marketing 94 Ways (picture above) in a boring way: I sit down for hours without any activity.  Such boring leads me to a small success: being the world's first and only author on WeChat Marketing.

If Not You, Who Else?

I learnt this very powerful 5-word phrase from Singapore's highest ever box-office movie ever: "Ah Boys to Men II". In one scene, the recruits were about to start their 3-day field camp.  Their Officer-in-Command asked them, "Before we moved out, anybody not feeling well?"  All the soldiers replied loudly, "No Sir!!!" "Gentlemen", continued the Officer, "Every time the training gets tougher, one thought comes to your mind, 'Why Must I Serve National Service?' "My answer to you is, 'If Not You, Then Who Else?'" Wow!  What a powerful phrase!  If Not You, Who Else may mean: You are the most suitable person, and we can't find anyone better than you.  This is appreciation at the highest level How can you push this responsibility to someone else? I am making a request to you specifically, please don't reject my request Can you find me another person more suitable than you? Please refer me anot...

How I Became a Fortune Teller: Leveraging NLP, Fear and Greed, and Motivational Theories

Becoming a fortune teller wasn’t part of my childhood dreams. It started as an experiment, fueled by my curiosity about human behavior and the subtle forces that drive our decisions. Over time, what began as a study of psychology and human interaction evolved into an unexpected career—one where I use the tools of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), the primal drivers of fear and greed, and motivational theories to help people uncover their paths. The First Step: Understanding the Human Psyche I was always fascinated by why people do what they do. During my university years, I studied psychology, particularly the works of Abraham Maslow, B.F. Skinner, and Victor Vroom. Their theories provided insights into motivation, reinforcement, and decision-making. But I wanted to move beyond the academic realm and see how these theories worked in real life. Around this time, I discovered NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). This framework for understanding communication and behavior is based on the...
