Most Powerful Stratagem is No. 27: Play Dumb

This is the stratagem that saved me from being cheated by a close friend.

Stratagem 27: Play Dumb — The Power of Controlled Simplicity

In the world of strategy, intelligence does not always show itself at the front. Sometimes, the most powerful move is to hide your sharpness and let others underestimate you. That is the essence of Stratagem 27: Play Dumb (假痴不癲) — appearing harmless, simple, or unthreatening so others reveal their true colors while you stay in full control.

Most people want to look smart, clever, brilliant. But in strategy, when you show too much, you lose too much.
The greatest advantage in any battlefield, business, leadership, negotiation, or even daily life, is knowing more than others think you know.

When you “play dumb”, three things happen:

  1. People relax and drop their guard.

  2. You gain information that they would never reveal to a strong opponent.

  3. You control the timing of your move, catching others by surprise.

This is not about being stupid. It is about acting unthreatening so your true intentions remain invisible.

Four Tactics from the Stratagem

1. Ask Questions No Matter What

Asking questions makes people think you are seeking guidance, but in truth you are collecting data.
People reveal their mindset through the questions you ask.
Every answer they give exposes a layer of their thinking.

2. Answer a Question with a Question

This keeps you mysterious.
It shifts pressure back to the other person and forces them to speak more.
They think they are leading the conversation, but you are quietly guiding it.

3. Feign Ignorance to Test Honesty

People show their true character when they think you don’t know better.
If someone lies, exaggerates, or hides information, you will see it instantly.
If they stay honest even when you “don’t know”, you have found someone reliable.

4. Lower Yourself to Achieve Higher Goals

Sometimes you must bend to rise.
By appearing harmless, you gain access, opportunities, alliances, and advantages that a “clever-looking” person would be denied.
A soft approach often opens doors that brute strength cannot.

Why This Stratagem Works So Well Today

In a world where everyone is shouting to prove their intelligence, the one who stays quiet becomes the real observer.
The one who appears simple becomes the real strategist.
The one who hides their sharpness outplays those who flaunt theirs.

This is the wisdom behind Stratagem 27:
Hide brilliance behind simplicity.
Win without exposing your hand.

How I Became a Fortune Teller: Leveraging NLP, Fear and Greed, and Motivational Theories

Becoming a fortune teller wasn’t part of my childhood dreams. It started as an experiment, fueled by my curiosity about human behavior and the subtle forces that drive our decisions. Over time, what began as a study of psychology and human interaction evolved into an unexpected career—one where I use the tools of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), the primal drivers of fear and greed, and motivational theories to help people uncover their paths. The First Step: Understanding the Human Psyche I was always fascinated by why people do what they do. During my university years, I studied psychology, particularly the works of Abraham Maslow, B.F. Skinner, and Victor Vroom. Their theories provided insights into motivation, reinforcement, and decision-making. But I wanted to move beyond the academic realm and see how these theories worked in real life. Around this time, I discovered NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). This framework for understanding communication and behavior is based on the...

If Not You, Who Else?

I learnt this very powerful 5-word phrase from Singapore's highest ever box-office movie ever: "Ah Boys to Men II". In one scene, the recruits were about to start their 3-day field camp.  Their Officer-in-Command asked them, "Before we moved out, anybody not feeling well?"  All the soldiers replied loudly, "No Sir!!!" "Gentlemen", continued the Officer, "Every time the training gets tougher, one thought comes to your mind, 'Why Must I Serve National Service?' "My answer to you is, 'If Not You, Then Who Else?'" Wow!  What a powerful phrase!  If Not You, Who Else may mean: You are the most suitable person, and we can't find anyone better than you.  This is appreciation at the highest level How can you push this responsibility to someone else? I am making a request to you specifically, please don't reject my request Can you find me another person more suitable than you? Please refer me anot...
