Forget Pang Dong Lai, Henan Mine Crane Pays Even More to Staff?

What kind of boss puts RMB60 million in cash on tables and encourages employees to take more? Meet Cui Pei Jun (崔培军), founder of Henan Mine Crane . His generosity deserves attention alongside Pang Dong Lai’s boss Yu Dong Lai (于东来). But one clarification matters: public figures do not establish that Henan Mine Crane pays more per employee. What they reveal is an extraordinary commitment to sharing success. What's so Special about Henan Mine Crane? Founded in 2002, Henan Mine Crane manufactures cranes. Cui says its practice of distributing cash began in 2004, long before these celebrations became social-media sensations. For 2025, the company reported RMB270 million in net profit. Its year-end bonuses totalled approximately RMB180 million, equivalent to two-thirds of that reported profit , including around RMB60 million distributed physically at the annual celebration. The rewards extend throughout the year:   Women’s Day payments, Mid-autumn payments, Spring Festival payments,...

7 Ways to have Mindfulness in Your Daily Life

Mindfulness can help you win without fighting. Be mindful, not mindfull.  Yes, you do not need to sit down to meditate to have Mindfulness, which can be easily achieved daily in the following 7 ways: 1. Minding the mind: what is the mind doing now? Watch your emotions, instead of being the emotion. You do not have to own your thoughts and emotions.  Tap into a calm state of mind amidst the emotions.  Eg when you feel angry, experience the anger and let it pass.  You are not anger. 2. Practise kindness when you don't feel good, "May I be happy and well" 3. Watch your breathing  4. Mindful walking: walk and let your mind go at ease, and just be aware of your steps. 5. Mindful eating .  Just eat, notice the taste of food 6. Mindful talking : speak with kindness even when you need to be harsh. Don't react 7. Meditate before sleep : just 5 to 10 minutes of following your breath going in and out. Turn your attention inwards.

How to Get What You Want All the Time

When You Are Not Getting What You Want, Go Back to the 3Cs Many people become frustrated when they don't achieve what they want. So they look for someone who has succeeded before them. They ask:  “What's the secret?” “What strategy did you use?” “What am I doing wrong?” My answer is often much simpler: Go back to basics. And my basics are just three things: Care. Courage. Connection. 1. CARE — Do You Care Enough About the Purpose? Care doesn't mean working harder. It doesn't mean spending more hours preparing or making everything perfect. It means:  Do you care enough to understand WHY you are doing it? Imagine you are organising a reunion for old classmates.  You can spend weeks designing the perfect poster, choosing the best restaurant and planning entertainment. But what is the real purpose?  To eat?  To be entertained? Or to bring old friends' hearts together again? Once you understand the purpose, suddenly you know what really matters and what doesn't. That...

What Do Rising Costs, AI Job Losses and War Have in Common?

Three Big Problems. One Human Response: Love Intelligence. We are living through three powerful sources of anxiety: Rising cost of living. In Singapore, consumer prices were 2.3% higher year-on-year in August 2026, with recent energy and transport-related increases adding pressure.  Fear of losing jobs to AI. The evidence is more nuanced than “AI is taking all our jobs”: the ILO says large-scale displacement remains limited so far, but AI is reshaping work and increasing the importance of higher-order cognitive, socio-emotional, adaptability and human-agency skills.  War and geopolitical uncertainty. The Iran conflict continues to affect energy, shipping and businesses globally, while diplomacy remains uncertain. These look like three completely different problems. But perhaps they share one question: How should human beings respond when the world becomes more uncertain? My answer is Love Intelligence: Care, Courage and Connection. CARE when costs rise. Don't simply complai...

How to Save 14% When Fares Rise 7% — with SuperME

Singapore's public transport fares will rise by 7% from 26 December 2026 . Adult card fares will increase by 12–13 cents per journey. Most people will ask:  "Why are fares going up again?" A SuperME asks a different question: "What can I do so that I actually spend less?" That is the difference between reacting to change and unleashing yourself through change . Don't Accept +7%. Turn It into −14%. Suppose you currently spend $100 a month on transport.  A 7% increase could turn that into $107. But instead of accepting $107, set yourself a SuperME Challenge : Reduce your original $100 spending by 14% to $86. That means finding $21 of smarter choices compared with simply continuing your old travelling habits after the fare increase. How? Walk instead of taking a bus for short journeys.  Combine appointments so that you make fewer trips.  Use Singapore's distance-fare transfer rules intelligently. Travel before the morning peak when practical—commuters tapp...

Trump Says Will Hit Iran Very Hard, Sun Tzu said War Ending Soon

When President Donald Trump states that the U.S. will hit Iran "very hard" but that the conflict will end "very soon, one way or the other", it sounds like typical political bluster. However, viewed through the lens of Sun Tzu's The Art of War , this dynamic actually reflects classic strategic principles of endgame pressure, economic strangulation, and forcing an opponent's collapse. Translated for a layman, here is why a strategic analysis using Sun Tzu suggests the conflict is nearing a tipping point: 1. "All Warfare is Based on Deception" (The Strategy of Maximum Pressure) Sun Tzu’s Principle: Sun Tzu teaches that when you are strong, you should appear formidable, and you must break the enemy’s resistance without actually having to destroy everything, if possible. The Layman Translation: Trump’s public declarations and military positioning (such as moving additional carrier groups and threatening severe strikes) are designed to convince Tehra...

Why Your Favorite Neighborhood Shops Are Empty

Why Your Favorite Neighborhood Shops Are Empty (And Why They Won't Stay That Way) Have you walked down your local high street recently and felt a pang of sadness? Block after block, once-vibrant storefronts sit empty with dusty windows, "For Rent" signs, or strange pop-up displays. It feels like every neighborhood favorite is disappearing, replaced by hollow ghosts of commerce. If you have ever asked yourself, "Why would a landlord rather let a shop sit empty for two years than just lower the rent?" you are touching on a strange quirk of modern finance. But don't despair, while the system looks broken, history and basic economics tell us that market forces always win in the end. The Mystery of the Stubborn Landlord To understand why shops stay empty, you have to look at how landlords borrow money. Many commercial buildings are tied to massive bank loans. When a bank lends money, it bases the loan amount on how much rent the building is supposed to make on ...

No Love in Marriage? Have Love Intelligence

Marriage Ultimately Depends Not on Love, but Love Intelligence We don't really need to envy other people's marriages. The loving photos we see on social media rarely tell the whole story. When two people live together for 10, 20 or 30 years, how can everything possibly remain as exciting as when they first fell in love? People change.  Our bodies change. Careers change. Circumstances change. Needs change. Temptations don't disappear just because we are married, and neither do the pressures of life. So perhaps the hardest part of marriage isn't falling in love with someone . It is this: After loving someone for many years, do you still know how to love that person? Some marriages eventually become less about living together and more about enduring each other .  We endure until we stop arguing. We endure until we compromise.  We endure until the children grow up. And eventually, we may not even know whether we are staying because of love, responsibility, habit, or simply ...

Top 5 Myths and Truths About Advisory Boards

Top 5 Myths and Truths About Advisory Boards—and Why You May Need One Many companies need expertise, connections and independent perspectives—but are not ready to hire more senior executives or appoint additional directors. An Advisory Board may be the answer. Yet many businesses misunderstand how it works. Myth 1: Advisory Boards Are Only for Large Corporations Truth: Smaller businesses may benefit even more. Growing companies often lack specialised expertise in areas such as finance, AI, governance, sustainability, international expansion and succession. An Advisory Board gives them access to experienced people without employing them full-time. Myth 2: An Advisory Board Is Another Board of Directors Truth: The two perform different roles. A Board of Directors has formal decision-making powers and legal responsibilities. An Advisory Board offers advice, challenges assumptions and recommends possible actions—but management retains the final authority. Myth 3: Advisory Boards Are Expe...

Whose Sustainability Are We Sustaining? Transport Fares Up by 7%

How to Have Financial Sustainability When Costs Rise More Than Wage Increase? Singapore’s recent public transport fare increase provides a useful lesson about financial sustainability, not only for transport operators, but for every one of us. From 27 December 2026, public transport fares will increase by 7% overall . The Public Transport Council explained that the adjustment reflects factors including wage, energy and other operating costs. At the same time, the Government is providing additional subsidies to moderate the increase for commuters. Why? One reason is financial sustainability . But that raises another question: If public transport needs higher fares because its costs are rising, what happens to commuters whose own costs are rising faster than their wages? What is Financial Sustainability? Financial sustainability is not simply having enough money today. It means: Having sufficient recurring income and resources to meet your recurring costs over the long term, without cont...

Sustaining Sustainability is More Important than Sustainability

What exactly is sustainability? At its simplest, sustainability means being able to continue something over time without exhausting or destroying what makes it possible. This is broader than ESG or the environment. A company may make profits this year, but if it burns out its people, loses customer trust or takes excessive risks, those profits may not be sustainable. A person may work 16 hours every day and achieve extraordinary results. But if that destroys their health, relationships or ability to continue performing, that way of working is not sustainable. So sustainability is really about continuity of value creation . But can we sustain sustainability? A company can launch a sustainability initiative. It can reduce emissions, introduce employee-wellbeing programmes, publish an ESG report or adopt responsible AI principles. But what happens three years later? Management changes. Profits fall. Employees lose interest. The sustainability team changes. A new technology arrives. Shareh...

Reason I Seldom Use AI to Create My Photos

In an AI World Where Anyone Can Create Anything, Who Can You Trust? Today, almost anyone can create almost anything. AI can write an impressive article in seconds.  It can create beautiful photographs of people who never existed. It can clone voices, generate videos, compose music, design advertisements and make ordinary people appear to be experts. Soon, the question may no longer be: “Can this be created?”   Almost certainly, it can. The more important question becomes: “Can I trust it?” And even more importantly: “Can I trust YOU?” AI Makes Creation Cheap. Trust Becomes Expensive. When everyone can produce professional-looking content, appearance becomes less valuable. When everyone can sound knowledgeable, knowledge alone becomes less differentiating. When anyone can create the image of success, reputation becomes more important than presentation. The competitive advantage therefore shifts. From what you can create to whether people believe you . From information to i...
