How to have an Independent Mind in the Age of AI

Many people think independence means not listening to others.

It does not.

True independence means being able to hear many voices without losing your own.

Today, we are surrounded by influences:

  • Social media tells us what to think.
  • Friends tell us what to do.
  • Society tells us what success should look like.
  • AI can even tell us what to say and write.

The greatest danger is not that others influence us.

The greatest danger is that we no longer know what we truly think, feel, and believe.

What Is an Independent Mind?

An independent mind can:

  • Think without blindly following.
  • Feel without being controlled by emotions.
  • Decide without seeking constant approval.
  • Change when evidence changes.
  • Stand alone when necessary.

An independent mind is neither stubborn nor rebellious.

It is clear.

Why Most People Lose Their Independence

Many people become dependent on:

1. External Validation

"I am valuable only if others approve of me."

2. External Authority

"If an expert says so, it must be true."

3. External Circumstances

"I can only be happy when things go my way."

Gradually, they stop listening to their own wisdom.

How LQ Creates an Independent Mind

1. Care — Listen to Yourself Honestly

Most people care for everyone except themselves.

LQ begins with self-care.

Ask:

  • What am I truly feeling?
  • What do I genuinely want?
  • What values matter to me?

When you care enough to hear your own heart, you stop borrowing other people's opinions as your identity.

2. Courage — Think the Truth, Speak the Truth

An independent mind requires courage.

Sometimes:

  • The crowd is wrong.
  • The popular opinion is wrong.
  • Your friends may disagree.

Courage is not attacking others.

It is remaining faithful to what you sincerely believe is right.

As Sun Tzu taught, victory begins before the battle.

A person who cannot stand by his convictions has already lost before any battle begins.

3. Connection — Stay Open Without Being Controlled

Many people confuse independence with isolation.

LQ teaches connection.

Listen deeply to others. Learn from others. Respect others.

But do not surrender your thinking.

Connection allows you to expand your perspective while keeping your center.

Like a tree:

  • The roots are independent.
  • The branches are connected.

Both are necessary.

The Yijing Perspective

The wisdom of Yijing teaches that the superior person (Junzi) does not react blindly to circumstances.

Instead, he observes, reflects, and acts according to principle.

He is influenced by the world but not controlled by it.

That is true independence.

In the Age of AI

AI can generate answers.

But AI cannot decide your values.

AI can write an article.

But AI cannot determine your purpose.

AI can process information.

But only a human heart can transform information into wisdom.

That is why the future belongs not to those who know the most, but to those who can think independently, love deeply, and act courageously.

The LQ Formula for Independent Thinking

Before making an important decision, ask:

Care:
What is the loving thing to do for myself and others?

Courage:
What is the right thing to do, even if it is difficult?

Connection:
How can I strengthen relationships while staying true to my values?

When these three questions align, you are no longer living by pressure, fear, or popularity.

You are living from your own center.

And that is the essence of an independent mind.

An independent mind is not a mind that stands against everyone. It is a mind that remains true to itself while remaining connected to humanity. That is the power of Love Intelligence.

How I Became a Fortune Teller: Leveraging NLP, Fear and Greed, and Motivational Theories

Becoming a fortune teller wasn’t part of my childhood dreams. It started as an experiment, fueled by my curiosity about human behavior and the subtle forces that drive our decisions. Over time, what began as a study of psychology and human interaction evolved into an unexpected career—one where I use the tools of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), the primal drivers of fear and greed, and motivational theories to help people uncover their paths. The First Step: Understanding the Human Psyche I was always fascinated by why people do what they do. During my university years, I studied psychology, particularly the works of Abraham Maslow, B.F. Skinner, and Victor Vroom. Their theories provided insights into motivation, reinforcement, and decision-making. But I wanted to move beyond the academic realm and see how these theories worked in real life. Around this time, I discovered NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). This framework for understanding communication and behavior is based on the...

If Not You, Who Else?

I learnt this very powerful 5-word phrase from Singapore's highest ever box-office movie ever: "Ah Boys to Men II". In one scene, the recruits were about to start their 3-day field camp.  Their Officer-in-Command asked them, "Before we moved out, anybody not feeling well?"  All the soldiers replied loudly, "No Sir!!!" "Gentlemen", continued the Officer, "Every time the training gets tougher, one thought comes to your mind, 'Why Must I Serve National Service?' "My answer to you is, 'If Not You, Then Who Else?'" Wow!  What a powerful phrase!  If Not You, Who Else may mean: You are the most suitable person, and we can't find anyone better than you.  This is appreciation at the highest level How can you push this responsibility to someone else? I am making a request to you specifically, please don't reject my request Can you find me another person more suitable than you? Please refer me anot...
