Are Cheap Online Purchases Making Us Poorer? We love a bargain.  Why pay $20 in a shop when the same-looking item costs $5 on Pinduoduo, Taobao, Temu or another overseas platform? We save $15. Good deal. But there is a bigger question: We saved $15—but what did our nation lose? When $20 is spent at a local business, that money doesn't stop at the cashier. Part becomes an employee's salary. Part pays rent, delivery companies, accountants, cleaners, suppliers and other businesses. These people spend the money again. Money moves. Money creates more economic activity. When more of our purchases go directly overseas, however, much less of that money circulates within Singapore. One purchase means almost nothing. 企业治理：让企业跑得更快的“刹车” 很多人认为， 企业治理（Corporate Governance）就是管制 。 更多规则、更多审批、更多限制——不是让企业跑得更慢吗？ 恰恰相反。 企业治理就像汽车的刹车。 一辆跑车为什么敢开到200公里时速？ 不只是因为引擎强大，更因为它有一套可靠的刹车系统。 没有刹车，你不敢快。 刹车越可靠，你反而越敢加速。 企业也是如此。 Hyflux凯发给我们的治理启示 Hyflux曾经是新加坡令人骄傲的企业，从一家小型水处理公司发展成为国际企业。 后来，随着Tuaspring项目出现严重问题，Hyflux最终在2018年进入司法管理程序，并于2021年清盘。 值得我们思考的是： Hyflux不是没有董事会。 不是没有独立董事。 也不是没有各种委员会。 真正的问题是： 当企业高速前进时，刹车有没有真正发挥作用？ 企业治理不能只是“有制度、有委员会、有独立董事”。 关键时刻，董事是否敢问： “我们忽略了什么？” “如果我们的假设错了，会怎样？” “这个风险，我们真的承受得起吗？” 这才是独立董事真正的价值。 企业治理的三大“刹车” 我认为，好的企业治理不只是遵守法律法规，而是做好三件事： 第一，风险（Risk）——保护价值。 不是叫企业不要冒险，而是确保我们知道自己在冒什么险，以及最坏的情况是什么。 第二，问责（Accountability）——提升决策。 独立董事不是来反对管理层，也不是来做“好好先生”，而是要独立思考、挑战假设，在关键时刻敢问难问的问题。 第三，信任（Trust）——创造价值。 好的治理带来透明，透明带来信心，信心带来信任。 投资者更敢投资，银行更愿意融资，合作伙伴更愿意合作，优秀人才也更愿意加入。 所以： **风险保护价值。 问责提升决策。 信任创造价值。** 企业治理不是成本，更不是企业发展的障碍。 它是一套让企业 更安全、更有信心、更快速成长 的系统。 所以，董事会真正应该问的，不只是： “我们合规了吗？” 而是： “我们的刹车，足够让我们放心加速吗？” 因为真正优秀的独立董事，不是不断踩刹车的人。 而是知道什么时候应该说： “前进。” 什么时候应该说： “慢一点。” 什么时候必须说： “停下来。” 好的企业治理，不是让企业慢下来。 而是让企业有能力、有信心，跑得更快、更远。

为什么金生水？ 在《易经》五行——或者我更喜欢称为 五种流动的元素 ——当中，很多人最难理解的就是： 为什么金生水？ 水生木，我们懂——植物需要水才能生长。 木生火，我们懂——木可以燃烧成火。 火生土，我们也懂——燃烧之后化为灰土。 土生金，也不难理解——金属矿物藏在大地之中。 但是， 金怎么会生水？ 把一块金属放在桌上，等一天，也不会流出水来！ 关键就在于，我们不能把五行的**“生”**理解得太字面。 “生”不一定是“A变成B”，也可以理解为： 创造条件，让下一种力量产生、发挥和流动。 最简单的例子，就是从冰箱拿出一罐冰冷的饮料。 过了一会儿，罐子的表面出现了什么？ 水珠。 当然，水不是金属“制造”出来的，而是冰冷的表面让空气中的水分凝结出来。 所以，初学者可以这样记： 金不是变成水，而是创造条件，让水出现。 还有一个更容易记住的例子： 水管。 水为什么可以从水库流到我们的家，甚至流到几十层楼高的住宅？ 因为有管道。 金代表结构，水代表流动。 有了结构，水才能更有效地流动。 所以： 金生水 = 结构产生流动。 生活中其实到处都是“金生水”。 交通有规则，道路才顺畅。 公司有制度，工作才顺畅。 个人有预算，现金流才健康。 时间有规划，一天才不会白白流失。 看起来，规则限制了自由；实际上， 好的规则反而创造更大的自由。 这就是五行的智慧。 五行不是五种死板的物质，而是五种不断变化、相互影响的力量。“生”也不只是“制造”，而是 支持、创造条件、让下一股力量得以发生。 所以，要记住“金生水”，其实只需要记住一句话： 有规矩，才有流动。 金，是结构；水，是流动。 好的结构，不是阻止你前进，而是让你走得更顺、更快、更远。 这，就是金生水。

In Yijing Wuxing (五行), or the Five Moving Elements, most people have little problem understanding the first few relationships. Water grows Wood. 水生木 ( Plants need water to grow). Wood generates Fire. 木生火. ( Wood can be burned to create fire.) Fire generates Earth. 火生土. ( After something burns, it becomes ash and returns to the earth). Then we come to: Earth generates Metal. 土生金 ( Metal and minerals are found within the earth). So far, so good. But then comes the one that makes many beginners stop: Metal generates Water? 金生水? How can that be? Put a piece of metal on the table and wait. Water doesn't come out of it. The confusion comes because we interpret 生 (sheng) too literally. In Wuxing, 生 does not necessarily mean that one substance physically changes into another. It can also mean to give rise to, support, enable, or create the conditions for something to happen .
