VUCA: When IQ Is Not Enough, We Need LQ

VUCA: When IQ Is Not Enough, We Need LQ

We often hear that we are living in a VUCA world.

But what does VUCA really mean to ordinary people?

V — Volatility: Things change suddenly and quickly.
Prices rise, technology changes, markets move and yesterday's winning formula may stop working tomorrow.

U — Uncertainty: We don't know what will happen next.
Will AI replace my job? Will customers still buy from me? Will my business survive the next disruption?

C — Complexity: Everything is connected.
A war thousands of kilometres away can affect our food and energy prices. Pinduoduo can affect a neighbourhood retailer in Singapore. The RTS can change where Singaporeans shop, eat and spend.

A — Ambiguity: Even when we have information, the answer may not be clear.
The same AI that destroys some jobs creates others. The same RTS that takes spending out of Singapore can also bring Malaysian consumers into Singapore.

That is VUCA.

And its biggest impact may not be what happens around us.

It is what happens inside us.

Volatility creates fear.
Uncertainty creates anxiety.
Complexity creates confusion.
Ambiguity creates hesitation.

So we seek more information, more analysis and more AI.

But more intelligence does not necessarily give us more confidence.

This is where we need Love Intelligence — LQ.

Care: Don't React. Observe.

In uncertainty, Care means paying attention.

Listen to customers. Understand employees. Observe changes. Instead of immediately asking, “How do I protect myself?”, ask:

“What do people need now?”

VUCA creates new problems—and every genuine problem is also an opportunity to create value.

Courage: Don't Freeze. Act.

We will never have perfect information in a VUCA world.

Courage means making thoughtful decisions despite uncertainty.

AI is coming? Learn to work with AI.

Pinduoduo is cheaper? Stop competing only on price.

RTS makes JB five minutes away? Create something worth staying—or crossing the border—for.

Courage is not knowing that you will win. Courage is moving when you cannot know.

Connection: Don't Face VUCA Alone.

Complex problems rarely have individual solutions.

Build relationships. Collaborate. Ask for help. Share knowledge. Create communities.

The stronger our connections, the more resources, perspectives and opportunities we can access.

That gives us a simple way to respond to VUCA:

Volatility → Care keeps us grounded.
Uncertainty → Courage keeps us moving.
Complexity → Connection helps us solve together.
Ambiguity → Care + Courage + Connection help us find our way.

We cannot make the world less VUCA.

But we can become better at living in it.

IQ helps us understand what is happening.
AI helps us process what is happening.
LQ helps us decide how to respond.

And perhaps that is the real competitive advantage of the future:

When the world becomes more uncertain, don't just become smarter. Become more human.

How I Became a Fortune Teller: Leveraging NLP, Fear and Greed, and Motivational Theories

Becoming a fortune teller wasn’t part of my childhood dreams. It started as an experiment, fueled by my curiosity about human behavior and the subtle forces that drive our decisions. Over time, what began as a study of psychology and human interaction evolved into an unexpected career—one where I use the tools of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), the primal drivers of fear and greed, and motivational theories to help people uncover their paths. The First Step: Understanding the Human Psyche I was always fascinated by why people do what they do. During my university years, I studied psychology, particularly the works of Abraham Maslow, B.F. Skinner, and Victor Vroom. Their theories provided insights into motivation, reinforcement, and decision-making. But I wanted to move beyond the academic realm and see how these theories worked in real life. Around this time, I discovered NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). This framework for understanding communication and behavior is based on the...

If Not You, Who Else?

I learnt this very powerful 5-word phrase from Singapore's highest ever box-office movie ever: "Ah Boys to Men II". In one scene, the recruits were about to start their 3-day field camp.  Their Officer-in-Command asked them, "Before we moved out, anybody not feeling well?"  All the soldiers replied loudly, "No Sir!!!" "Gentlemen", continued the Officer, "Every time the training gets tougher, one thought comes to your mind, 'Why Must I Serve National Service?' "My answer to you is, 'If Not You, Then Who Else?'" Wow!  What a powerful phrase!  If Not You, Who Else may mean: You are the most suitable person, and we can't find anyone better than you.  This is appreciation at the highest level How can you push this responsibility to someone else? I am making a request to you specifically, please don't reject my request Can you find me another person more suitable than you? Please refer me anot...
