Economic Growth No Longer Guarantees Job Growth
For decades, we understood economic growth quite simply:
Economy grows → Companies grow → Companies hire → More jobs
AI is beginning to break that relationship.
Today, a company can increase sales, serve more customers and produce more output without increasing its workforce proportionately.
Why?
Because AI allows the same person, or a much smaller team, to accomplish far more.
The ILO's review of AI research found substantial productivity gains in experiments, while the World Economic Forum says 86% of employers expect AI and information-processing technologies to transform their businesses by 2030.
This does not mean economic growth will create no jobs. It means the old assumption that growth automatically produces large numbers of similar jobs is becoming less reliable.
AI Is Not Just Changing Technology Companies
Consider what is already happening across industries.
In finance, AI can analyse data, draft reports and detect anomalies.
In marketing, it can produce advertisements, presentations, videos and customer analysis.
In law, it can search documents, summarise cases and prepare first drafts.
In retail, AI and automation can forecast demand, manage inventory and personalise recommendations.
In manufacturing and logistics, robotics and AI increasingly optimise production and movement.
Even managers are affected. AI can prepare reports, analyse performance, generate strategies and recommend decisions.
The World Economic Forum expects technology to create jobs as well as destroy them: across all major structural trends, it projects 170 million jobs created and 92 million displaced by 2030. But almost 40% of workers' existing skills are expected to change or become outdated.
So perhaps the biggest danger isn't:
“AI will take my job.”
It is:
“Someone using AI can now create much more value than I can.”
Then How Do We Stay Employed?
I believe we need AI + HI + LQ.
1. AI — Learn to work with machines.
Don't compete with AI at what AI does best. Learn to use it.
An accountant should not merely prepare accounts; use AI to identify patterns and become a better adviser.
A salesperson should not merely write proposals; use AI to understand customers and spend more time building relationships.
A manager should not merely produce reports; use AI to obtain insights and spend more time leading people.
AI literacy is rapidly becoming basic workplace literacy.
2. HI — Strengthen your Human Intelligence.
The more machines can do, the more valuable certain human abilities become.
- Judgment.
- Creativity.
- Context.
- Ethics.
- Leadership.
- Responsibility.
The WEF similarly finds that alongside AI and technological skills, employers continue to value creative thinking, resilience, flexibility, leadership and collaboration.
But I believe there is one more layer.
3. LQ — Develop Love Intelligence.
AI can generate a perfect customer-service response.
But can it genuinely care about the customer?
AI can recommend what a manager should say.
But can it have the courage to stand beside an employee during a crisis?
AI can connect millions of data points.
But humans create meaningful connections between people.
These are the 3Cs of Love Intelligence (LQ):
Care. Courage. Connection.
And ironically, the more intelligent AI becomes, the more valuable these deeply human qualities may become.
That may be the wrong competition.
A calculator defeated us at arithmetic long ago. We didn't become useless because we stopped competing with calculators.
We moved upwards. We must do the same with AI.
Let AI do more of what machines do best.
Develop more of what humans do best.
The future may therefore belong neither to AI alone nor humans who reject AI.
It belongs to:
Humans Powered by AI, Guided by LQ.
So don't just ask:
“Will my job still exist?”
Ask a much more powerful question:
“What value can I create that AI makes stronger rather than replaces?”
Because in the AI era, staying employed will increasingly depend not merely on what you know.
It will depend on how well you use AI, and how deeply human you remain.
